Different Software
You've just finished your work at home on your own computer with your own software, but when you go to print, you find that your printer isn't working (for whatever reason.) But, you think, that's ok. You email the document to yourself, planning to open it at school to print it out there to have for class.

You're all set, right?
Maybe, maybe not. With the emphasis on not.
The newer your home system is, the greater the chance that you have newer software which is not compatible with what we have here. Or you may have a completely different software package that we don't have.
Word Processors
The best way to be sure that you can open your file at school is to save it in Rich Text Format. This will work fine for most documents, but may not work for files containing pictures.
- From the "File" menu of your software choose, "Save As". (You would normally choose "Save As" whenever you want to save a file with a different name, in a different location, or in a different format.
- Your screen will look different depending on your software and operating system. But somewhere in the windows will be a choice for file format. Click on that choice.

- Choose "Rich Text Format" (or you may just see the option "RTF")

- Save your document where you can find it to get it to school.
Spreadsheets
If you are working in a spreadsheet, save your work in comma delimited format. That will work for most spreadsheet software, but again, will not work with pictures or charts.
