First Class - Disk Space Quota

Deleting Mail

Problem

You can receive mail, but you can't send anything. First Class keeps telling you that you've exceeded the space quota. You've deleted lots of mail, but you are STILL getting the error message.

Solution

If all you have to deal with is your mailbox, this will be simpler for you. If you have sorted messages into folders, or have uploaded files to the file system within First Class, you may have to check those other areas out as well. For this example, I am using a mailbox.

Please do not delete any files or messages that you need or may need later! This page is intended as an informative method of helping you find the space hogs. You are the one who must determine if you need them or not.

  1. Open your mail box
  2. If your messages are grouped in anyway, shut that off.
    From the View Menu
    First Class Menu - View
    Choose Change View Properties
    First Class View Menu
When the View Properties window opens
    View Properties
Click on the arrows to the right of Group items on:

    Sort Choice

Select None, then click the OK button to apply changes and close the window.

  3. Now you can click on the Size heading to sort by size

    Sorted by Size
If you had Reverse Sort checked in your View Properties window, you will see the largest files first. If you see smaller files first, you can click on the Size heading again to show the largest files.

  4. With the larger messages at the top, it is easier to see what you can benefit from deleting. Simply choose the messages you don't need and delete them.
  5. When you are done deleting, you can go back to View Properties and choose your sort choice.

But I need some of them!

In the sample mailbox above, I can delete the Photos message at the top because I saved them to my computer. I would not, however, want to delete the second message, as it contains files that I may need in my work. I see I have several similar email messages that I've sent containing pictures. I no longer need them, so they can be deleted without problem. In fact, in the 139 Files listed as being in the above mailbox, 10 of them are 1 MB or above. If I don't need any of them, deleting them could free up almost 25 MB of space!
